IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Top Gun Miramar

The IWC Miramar watch line is a fan favorite, named after the Naval Air Station where the TOPGUN pilots are trained. For SIHH 2016, the brand’s revamping of the Pilot Watch line also has brought some changes and a new watch to their Miramar line. And it’s definitely looking as if it’s for the better. It’s been four years since the military-themed ceramic IWC Top Gun Miramar Chronograph took to the skies, and in that time, some buyers have been muttering about a few grievances they have had with this otherwise generally liked lined. Namely, the altimeter-inspired triple date display and the “generous” sizing characteristic to the series. Fortunately, for 2016, the IWC Replica has slimmed down to a 44mm case with a slick combined hour and minute totalizer at 12:00, and now uses a single-date window. As before, the chronograph is equipped with a titanium crown and pushers, along with IWC’s in-house manufactured 89361 calibre, with a flyback function and 68 hours of power reserve, which is fully shielded with a soft-iron inner cage for enhanced magnetic protection in the cockpit.

But perhaps more exciting about the 2016 Top Gun squadron is its newest recruit: the all-new Replica IWC, which pays homage to IWC’s Mark 11 from the 1940s with a classic observer “B-Uhr” style dial fitted to an all-new 41mm ceramic case. As IWC’s most entry-level ceramic offering, the Mark XVIII is fitted with many of the same features as its big brother, including the same titanium crown, 6-bar water resistance and soft-iron cage for anti-magnetic protection. This is pretty interesting news and a very clever way for an established Swiss watch maker like Breitling to assert itself as a modern brand but also respect the functionality of a standalone timepiece.

The Breitling Cockpit B50 had Breitling produce a new Superquartz movement that was exclusive to them and featured a rechargeable battery and some extra functionality compared to their existing Superquartz-based timepiece with an ETA movement. It was so close to a smartwatch… but just shy of having real connectivity. Now just a few months later, in advance of Baselworld 2015, Cheap Breitling Replica more-or-less updates the same watch to the Breitling B55 Connected, and unless the pricing is very different, I’d probably say that the B50 might not be as attractive, depending on what you want to do with it.

So the most important question you should have is, “is this a smartwatch?” Sort of… I tend to think of a smartwatch as a timepiece that connects with your phone in order to display information from your phone such as notifications, etc… For the Breitling B55 Connected, your phone and watch do communicate with one another, and do share some pieces of data, but the Breitling B55 Connected is not about giving you missed call notifications or tracking your daily steps. Think of your smartphone with the Breitling B55 Connected app to serve as a sort of remote control for the watch, allowing you to quickly update the time and calendar, and more-or-less adjust all the settings such as alarms, time zones indicators, and the various time measurement functions the Breitling B55 Connected has. This is a pilot watch, after all, so most of the functions revolve around flight.The Breitling B55 Connected comes in a 46mm wide black-coated titanium case. The dial is almost identical to that of the Cockpit B50 but there is a blue “connected” symbol on the dial that looks like a wifi symbol. This element will no doubt be among the more controversial elements of the design. I’m pretty sure there could have been a slicker way to do that, but maybe in person, it will look really cool. Otherwise, you have a rather standard modern Breitling Swiss Replica look that is very functional-looking and masculine.

Not a new function in the scheme of watches, but we do all applaud when the Swiss catch up. I more-or-less see the Breitling B55 Connected as the ultimate G-Shock, and in a sense, it is.

IWC Replica Da Vinci Ladies’ Collection Redesigned For The Zeitgeist

It’s the year of the Da Vinci for IWC Schaffhausen, and of three new introductions unveiled at a preview in New York yesterday, two are ladies’ timepieces, with more ladies’ pieces set to be introduced at the SIHH next month in Geneva. The introductions are a concerted effort by IWC to strengthen the brand’s ladies’ collections, according to IWC charming fake watches creative director Christian Knoop, who says “We are consciously trying to anchor the brand in the minds of women, who account for a significant proportion of watch lovers.” IWC’s iconic Da Vinci line, first introduced in the 1980s, has not been revised since 2007.

The first of the two new ladies’ watches is the Da Vinci Automatic 36 Ref.IW458312, in stainless steel with an intense blue dial that is a nod to a vintage ladies’ IWC. The company has been making ladies’ wristwatches since the 1930s; in fact, its first wristwatches were for ladies, since pocket Replica Watches were still the preferred timepieces for men. Although price points are not confirmed yet, part of the goal in this new model (of which there are five references), is to offer “competitive pricing,” says Knoop. The bezel of the steel model, shown above, is set with 54 diamonds totaling just under a carat. There are five references in the collection, including gold pieces with and without diamonds, and various colored straps, including raspberry and bronze. The new Da Vinci models maintain some of the line’s original design codes. The most important of these, especially from the ladies’ perspective, are the moveable lugs that give the watch a snug fit. Moveable lugs are distinctive to the Da Vinci collection, and do not appear on any other lines within the brand. “We spent the most time in development on this aspect,” says Knoop. “Although the concept of moveable lugs has always been signature to the IWC Replica Watches collection, they had to be completely re-engineered because the lugs on the new models were redesigned to be more streamlined – the older lugs were too long. In looking for a solution, we built 8-10 different prototypes, finally deciding on the one that we thought would be most contemporary and ergonomic.”

The new ladies’ Da Vinci watches are ideal daily wear pieces. As Knoop pointed out, “IWC is not a romantic, playful brand. The watches are very clean cut. We are a brand with roots in pocket watches.” At this particular moment, when luxury is struggling, people are shying away from anything too decorative, and this fits the bill perfectly.
